The Role Of Non-Profits In Helping To Fight The Coronavirus

We hear a ton about what all of these top medical institutions are doing during the coronavirus, but how are non-profits dealing with the situation? You may be surprised to know that a lot of these non-profits actually have a key role in getting us through this crisis sooner as opposed to later.

For starters; a lot of medical institutions lack funding. They have skills, but they do not have the funding required to practice these skills. As a result, a lot of the ‘top’ non-profits are donating heavily towards people working on treatments or preventative tactics for the coronavirus. In fact, when a vaccine does eventually pop up, expect it to be from a company that has received funding from non-profits. Even the big companies are getting a slice of the non-profit pie, because the more money, the easier everything goes.

Around the world, non-profits are also going to remote locations to help deliver medical support and help to prevent the coronavirus from spreading. This is the same as what has happened in past disease outbreaks. A lot of non-profits have been given responsibility for poorer regions, when governments around the world simply have not cared. In fact, non-profits were one of the main reasons why we have really cut back on certain diseases, or completely eliminated other ones.

Non-profits are also helping on a local level too. I read a story earlier about how non-profits in England are starting to deliver millions of meals to the needy around the country. This is something which we are probably going to see a lot of. People are out of work. This means that they are going to be struggling to feed themselves, and non-profits are probably going to help support a lot of these people. Non-profits will often be the difference between starvation and survival. Remember; this virus is not just going to kill people directly, but the economic fallout will do damage too.

Most non-profits are doing simpler things (but still just as important) in getting supplies from place to place, helping people with grocery deliveries, and even doing a spot of work for those who simply can’t go out due to being in one of the ‘risk groups’ for the disease.

Honestly; without the non-profits (many of them who do not actively promote their work), we would be in a far, far worse place when it comes to this pandemic.
